NiCad: need full charge+discharge. Li-Ion: is quite happy with a "shallow" discharge and constant recharging I've been told that the best way to keep a battery "fresh" it to keep it in the freezer - slows down the chemical reactions. Unfortunately you can't use it while frozen though... I never tried it myself though - i like (and sometimes need) the built-in UPS on my laptop... i know they are limited to 500 cycles full cycles are known to be better it it true ? 500 sounds a bit low... that would make it just under 2 years? Mine are on their 5th year - but they do discharge within 1 hour though... I'm not sure whether full cycles are better or not. There are too many variables in there the manufacturers don't tell.... ni/cad vs li-ion : is usually written on the outside. But the rest of the information: anybody's guess. there is always some electronics involved to avoid over-charging and under-charging. That might interfere with things. Or enforce a manufacturer-specified limit, to force you to buy a new one. Some batteries have a little bit of non-volatile memory in their circuitry to keep a "history". But this is nearly always hidden away... * http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/04/ask-ars-the-best-way-to-use-a-lithium-ion-battery-redux/ ==== [[Laptop]] Elite A530 / [[CPU]] = transmeta 5800 ==== 0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: Transmeta Corporation LongRun Northbridge (rev 03) 0000:00:00.1 RAM memory: Transmeta Corporation SDRAM controller 0000:00:00.2 RAM memory: Transmeta Corporation [[BIOS]] scratchpad 0000:00:05.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
